Meeting Needs
Providing Opportunities

Welcome to

 The ARC Alternative Academy

Specialising in behavioural mentoring and gang mediation, The ARC is an alternative provision with a difference.

Our students are often those that have broken down either during the latter stages of their primary education

journey or during their secondary education journey whether by behaviour, disaffection, gang affiliation and or more extreme circumstances.

The ARC's job is to steer our students back on their correct path, whilst challenging and analysing their decisions and behaviour.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY

Lucky for me I found my role model. A really caring teacher at my pupil referral centre sent me to a man called Colin James, who runs a charity called Gangs Unite [and the ARC]. Within weeks, that place became a second home.  He sat me down and just said, ‘What do you like doing?’ When I told him about athletics he came straight down to my local track to watch me in a sprint session and told me I was going to be a champ! Just the simple thing of having someone there for me going out of his way to watch me was a good feeling.

SHEVHON LUMSDEN,
FORMER STUDENT

It’s been a passion of mine to work with youth and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work, learn and grow on a number of projects and programmes. As a mother myself, I understand the importance of sound guidance, structure and a firm tongue, along with gentleness, understanding,

encouragement and consistency which can go a long way in enabling a young person to fulfil their potential. This is the recipe that we always stick by and something that we strive to provide.

Big Up to the Team!

ESTHER FIELD,
MENTOR

Gangs Unite has also been a pivotal part of my growth socially through the sports and mentoring programme. It helped me associate with young people my own age in all walks of life, this has enabled me to broaden

my perspective and gave me the opportunity to focus on what I would like to achieve in my life.

I sometimes look back [at my time at the ARC] with a smile on my face because of the realisation of how far I have come and what I’m willing to do to strive even further.

ARTHUR WRIGHT,
FORMER MENTOR & STUDENT
